Ok so Foster is far superiot behind the stumps but would you drop Prior for the Ashes? Surely his batting is enough to earn him a place in the team alone?

Not initially no, but I would give him a maximum of three tests to come to the party.
If you overlook better keepers in an attempt to score more runs you need that delivered, IMO.

Prior is a poor wicket and an ordinary batsmen, if you are looking to challenge the best teams in the world he simply isn't good enough.

So an average of 48 isnt good enough to be a batsman :/

Bopara 49
Bell 40
KP 50
Strauss 43
Shah 26
Cook 45
Collingwood  44

To me that would suggest he's good enough with the bat alone to be selected

Yes but look at who he has got his runs against. He has scored 1065 test runs in total. 739 of these have been against a very poor West Indies attack on mainly feather bed wickets at an average of 67. His remaining 8 tests against the far superior Indian and Sri Lanka attacks he has scored 326 runs at an average of 29. My argument is we are hopefully looking to build a side to compete against the best in the world not just meander along winning the odd game here and there. Prior has been shown to be inadequate at the highest level as a keeper and his figures so far against strong opposition show his batting also to be below the required standard.

Might aswell re work everyones averages then cause Boparas would definatly be lower. I just think he is good enough to be in there as a batsman alone when you have Colly and Bell being picked.

We will have to disagree over Prior for me his batting technique is poor and his keeping is a liability nothing more than a good county player at best. Its ok quoting averages but they don't tell the whole story. Its far more important to see who gets runs against good bowling attacks, on poor wickets or when your backs are against the wall. I hope he proves me wrong over the summer but I suspect not.
