Only if you're a middle-aged Dad trying desperately to embarrass their children. If so, horrific khaki shorts, a dreadful hat, and white socks pulled all the way up should work.

eg: football, rugby, tennis, hockey, etc.

athletics optional.

but not swimmers.

Unless you're doing some sort of running, no - should be some sort of sandals if you're wearing shorts

I always wear socks with sandals (and rarely shorts!) but only when I am in countries where protection is important (eg Rwanda, Albania and so on!) Socks can save you from a serious snake bite, although if there is that risk I prefer to wear boots that come over the ankle anyway....

OK would make an exception to the socks and sandals rule if there was a snake risk... but anywhere else got to be a no-no!

As my legs look like those elaborate carved Victorian piano legs that they used to coverup to protect the sensibilities of young ladies, I'm not going to be wearing shorts any time soon.....
