I know each stage has intermediate sprints on them so points can be scored throughout each stage but doesn't it seem slightly bizarre that one rider can win 6 (SIX!!!!!!) stages outright on a single Tour and not have enough points to win the Green Jersey.

Meanwhile the winner of the Green wins 1 stage during the Tour!

Agree with you Binge, perhaps the points for winning the stage should be more than those given for the intermediate sprints.

cavendish didnt win the green jersey because of the objection (upheld) against ihs riding when he was alleged to have "squeezed" the gree jersy winner against a rail; otherwise he would have won by a decent magin

the achievments of cavendish and wiggins are, frankly, monumental.

they desreve greater recognition and praise than the press are giving them... the trouble is john terry not moving is a bigger story than a british rider finishing 4th in the tour.

sadly,

Totally agree GR. I actually think of the British sporting achievements in 2009 thus far Cav ought to be a shoo-in for SPOTY but we know that won't happen (I expect he'll feature heavily in a lot of the writers awards though in Dec.)

Even if Button were to win the F1 Championship, in my eyes Cav's achievement surpasses that, as give or take each rider of the Tour is on the same bike. Yes there are team tactics and team mates are crucial but that is all human endeavour and precision out on the road - and virtually every stage that involved a sprint finish he won. Britain has the fastest man in the world on a bike!

Wiggins achievement is also phenomenal and it will be really interesting next year to watch it with a genuine GC contender. Top bloke too whenever I've seen him interviewed, I've got his autobiography (although it'll probably now get a re-print with this year's Tour - just as Hoy's did just after I'd read it when he then went and won 3 golds in China!)

The Independent's pretty good for cycling coverage. 4 full pages yesterday
