I agree we should encourage the rich to come here, stay here etc but only if they are willing to work and act ethically. This means(among other things), paying more than the average man on the street in taxes to support those who, through no fault of their own, aren't as well off. Most rich people who have made their money through hard work and were once poor or at least not rich understand this. The likes of Hesseltine, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, do not! Their are obviously exceptions to these rules on both sides(Tony Benn and Maggie Thatcher immediately spring to mind). _________________ You're born with nothing, and better off that way,

Well that worked well _________________ You're born with nothing, and better off that way,

Lawson gave the high earners a NETT 50% pay rise when he cut it from 60 to 40%.
You sound like a politician.

well i suppose he should have let the people keep all of "what was theirs" and the poor can go starve
then the economy would really get going just like in victorian times _________________ Geordie_R

But the middle and upper classes DO pay lots of taxes and carry the rest of the country that can't (or wont) help themselves.
The economy was doing fine until lack of proper regulation let it get out of control. Now let me think, which government was well into its second term when that happened...

The economy was fine until a year or so ago. What on earth are you on about, and what has Nigel Lawson got to do with it?
Sheesh.
Typical leftie nonsense _________________ The Skanky's Mob Facebook Group......

Nobody gave two hoots until interest rates went low, and house values and stockmarkets started going down. _________________ The Skanky's Mob Facebook Group......

then that's probably right because the rape of pension funds, the time bomb of public sector borrowing and pension obligations, and the bubble caused by the under-regulated financial services setor were all hidden. _________________ Geordie_R

And what about a farmer. House value? With or without land?.
Quite! Even with our land at current values, plus the house, the cottage and the barns, we would come in at nowhere near the trigger point. But we are very small, relatively, and lots of family farms in this area would be valued above £1,000,000 - but only on the land price plus the on-farm accommodation. I bet next door, with 500 acres and at least 3 houses, main farmhouse and two farmhand bungalows, are sweating a bit! They have a contract for milk for the local processing plant, but they are already heavily in debt and such a tax would cripple them.
We survive because (a) we get pensions and (b) we specialise in the high end of the market for milk products. But as a long-term economic unit, we aren't viable and will probably, sooner rather than later, have to sell up.
gordon brow has comma'd over the midle classes (but not the very rich) for 15 years
why are you surprised?
I know that and I'm not surprised. Rich people pay taxes too, but I don't agree with taking away 60% of their money. It's theirs, so what, if they use it to help create jobs for people to earn money then great but don't just take it all and give it to the poor.
I just have to laugh at folks who say the poor are left out in the cold, they get lots already and for nothing.
Looks like Labour are going back to its roots. Can't wait for the strikes.
