was discussing this oer a couple of llight ales last night
the assembled throng (fiar bit of cricket knowledge and experience presnt) all agreed that
[a] if the aussies had been beaten anywhere the way we were at headingley they would have named an unchanged side (unless bringing a fit player back previously missing through injury) and would have said "therse are our best opayers, we will pick them again, and they had a bad day at the office"
[b] england's immediate reaction was to make changes, rabbit in headlights time
[c] if you ask 100 county cricketers who is beteter, bopara or trott, 90% plus would say Bopara. Heis our fiture, two hundreds v west indies, let him bat 4 or 5.
[d] if you are going to bring anyone back for 1 game do not make it a player scoring runs in diviison 2 with a test average of 27 becuase the aussies will only worry about him if it is a dancing competition. Only one potential recalee as a batsman, trescothick, for one test, bat him at 3. _________________ Geordie_R

Bopara looks like a player lacking in confidence at the moment. A spell in Country Cricket before the next comp might help him find some form.
Trott will be an 'unknown' to the Aussies which may help Englands cause.
My mind keeps going back to when David Steele was a surprise call up in the Ashes series many years ago & he made a fair few runs! _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up
Ta Hampton - what I thought. I have to say that if there are plenty of runs in it our chances aren't looking all that good, based on current performances.....
It set to be very hot (Temp around 30c) & humid in London on Thursday & this could lead to heavy thunderstorms at some stage. Friday will be cooler with plenty of sunshine. _________________ SBH Comp 2008 - Runner Up
Despite a few of the England dismissals being disappointing/cheap I think another 50 runs and a good bowling performance will give England a good chance.
I'm sure they quoted the average first innings test score at The Oval is only 360 and the fact Aussie's part time spinner was turning it sharply out of an already crumbling pitch will mean it should be difficult to bat on last ..... so its if we bowl well enough to get to the position where Aussie does have to bat last it could be interesting!
Optimism the key..... (mainly becuase I'm going on Sunday!)
