Clinton Morrison?

It's a good debate. Be a shame to conduct it on a thread for a single particular sport when it is something that is so evident in nealy all sports now and notably not just 'English' claiming dual passport holders to represent them!

Where are all the doubters now?

Super finish (excellent bowling from Harmison). It is silly to presume that all will be well before it is. If one does, one takes the risk of looking extremely stupid.

Luckily, we bowled them out - but listening to the interviews after the match, not many England players thought it was a done deal at lunch today!

Im talking about earlier on in the tests when people were being very very negative!

for the second englad ashes series in a row the aussies have suffered with bowlers; Lee ot being fit was a blow and punters unwillingness to pick a ppinner at the oval clearly cost them; as did his constant unwillingness to bowl Kattich

Very close; the Aussies should crtainly have won at Cardiff (see Kattich not bowling....) and if they had done so the series would have looked very ifferent

small things chage matches; ane the two run-outs at the oval were vital.

Overall, the better TEAM won and the better PLAYERS probably lost. Punter has a place in history, the only Aussie captain to lose the ashes twice; one wonders how long he will keep the captaincy

The stats show the Aussies had the better players.

Batsmen scored 8 tons between them compared with only two for England.

They lead the bowling with 20+ wickets too, yet they still lost the series!

England won the pressure moments. Holding out for draw at Cardiff. Getting them out at Lords when they looked like getting the target set & in the end getting the better of the game at The Oval where the Aussies where all but outplayed.

Should be interesting when England tour South Africa in the Winter with maybe two S.A. born players!

it isnt just where they were born (Colin Cowdrey, of course, born in India) it is where they grew up, when they came to England, why, how they are qulaifid for england etc etc.

Hw helpful is it for the development of English cricket for a home grown and nurtured talent like bopara (who, lest it be forgotten, was dropped after scorng a ton int he west indies then scored another on recall in tehe third test out there and is one of only 5 england players to core tons in three consecutive tests) to be dropped for a player who represented his native south africa at under 16 and under 19 level and who qualifies for england as a result only of granparental ancestry (leaving aside the point I have made before, namely that if youa sk people who play county cricket who is the better player, most will say Bopara).

trott is by upbringing and attitude a South African. Ditto Pietersen. If SA were the top test side in he world and they had been picked by them would they have held out to play for england? no. i think they view this as a convenience to be able to pay test cricket.

it isnt just about picking the best available players if the impact is to stunt the evelopment of home grown talent.

Playing or representing a country at any sport has absolutly nothing to do with where you were born or where you were brought up It comes down to not breaking the rules to be able to play or represent that country and which country that Individual wants to play for.
It generally in most circumstances comes down to where that Individual has lived recently to what country he wants to represent as someone who was born in this country and maybe now lives in Australia would undoubtably want to represent Australia as otherwise he would have to make the choice to not only represent England but also move back(which only an Idiot would do) so In most cases they would choose there now home nation.

Only two? Who are they dropping?

Strauss - born Jo'burg
Prior - Jo'burg
Trott - Cape Town
PK - Pietermaritzburg

Of course, if you're talking raised/played cricket, that's different - but we currently have 4 SA-born players and Kieswetter qualifies for England next year.

Ha! I should of remembered the others as they were going through the list the other day!

S.A. said Trott wouldn't be good enough to be in their team right now! If it's a case of never being able to play for the Country of your birth then playing for another Country as been the only way of playing Test cricket.

There is a fair number of players born in S.A. who have played for England over the years.
