I had a small bet on Philson Run and could not believe how well he was travelling, and yes you are right the fall of Simon did him no favours at all. Lost his rythmn at that point, but stayed on well I thought. 100/1 was too big for him aswell. Good pick by the way.

A brilliant race worthy of Aintree don't you think.
A few hard luck stories in there as ever. McKelvey seemed to be hampered quite badly a couple of times (at Beechers second time he had to do a bit of nifty avoidance) and Philson Run was badly hampered when travelling well when Simon came down in front of him and put him out of his rhythm.
Bewley's did a bit of a Andy Pandy/Strands of Gold/West Tip and I don't think Ballycassidy will ever get round with his jockey still intact.
Simon I have to admit was running a big race but rather like Ballycassidy it was too far out to know whether he would have stayed or not.
As a post script if you are looking for a future Aintree horse, not for next year but maybe in 2 years time a rather reliable source close to me suggests that Donald McCain's Ice Tea who ran a smashing race on Thursday will develop into a very decent staying chaser. Tough to pass he has a wonderful staying pedigree so make a note of him if you have not already.
I fancied Mckelvey big time and started backing him 5 weeks ago at 40/1 all the way down to 20/1 - did i do any e/w money?? no, of course not.
1 furlong out i was convinced he'd won but he found no extra near the end- maybe that was when the injury kicked in (he hung right too)?
Oh well, at least i got a buzz; well done McKelvey - get well and try and go one better next year
Owl
Never mind, I dreamed that the winning horse had a V in its name,
I backed, McKelVey, NumbersixValderVe, BillyVodden, LiVingstonebramble and er Liberthine.
looking forward to going to work this morning to be greeted by "how much did you win then" or "I backed the winner thanks for telling me."
How did I manage to miss out SilVer Birch, for heaven sake!
This is a good advertisement for my Derby winner dream,
I will only divulge the name for a fee though, so just send cash or jewelry to .....
It will be interesting to see what the handicapper does(the idiot he is) with the first 4 home along with the ones that fell when going well.
At a guess knowing the spineless wimp he is i would say Silver Birch 10lbs, Mckelvy 9lbs, Slim Pickings 8lbs, Philsun Run 5lbs and he will probably shove 2/3lbs on Bewleys Berry & Simon
Well Tutored could be one for next year but i would think he would have another go at the Irish again but you never know _________________ Forest are Treemendous
Graphic Approach is reported to be in a "stable" condition after suffering a concussion in the John Smith's Grand National.
Charles Egerton's runner fell at Becher's Brook on the second circuit of the Aintree feature and was down on the track for some time receiving treatment.
The following novice chase was delayed by some 45 minutes and the closing bumper was abandoned so vets could attend to the nine-year-old.
"He's at the Royal Liverpool Veterinary College. He's stable and there has been some significant improvement overnight," said Egerton.
"I would like to thank the Aintree veterinary team for their very professional and slick response.
"They were so professional and did a very good job. I would also like to thank the Aintree team for putting the welfare of the horse first.
"It is a relief to hear he's improving."
Egerton also sent out Gallant Approach to finish 12th of the 13 finishers and added: "He's come out of it fine."
I guess a lot will revolve around whether Hedgehunter turns up again.
But I'm guessing he'll be too old next year and the handicapper will have him in his grip but he'll still show up. A lot of the old guard such as no6vv, clan royal, Kelami, L'ami etc are too hign in the weights.
It's odd to say but it's probably a blessing in disguise that simon didn't complete I think his handicap mark won't be a lot different to this years one and he'll be a year older and wiser. Hopefully they'll target him for it next year !!!
Longshanks didn't stay so you can immediatly write him off now.
Pomt Barrow/Bothar Na/Naunton Brook all the right type of age not sure if they'll come back next year though !!!
Butlers Cabin ticks all the right boxes, but no course/aintree fence form, so difficult to asses.
Halcon Genelardais too young - possible soft ground lover.
Mckelvys had his day TTT because he finsihed so close he will be clobbered by the handicapper giving him no chance next year he will virtually get the same punishment as the winner _________________ Forest are Treemendous

Unfortunately he will now have to run off a 9lb higher than he ran in the national, so i couldn't be too hopeful about his prospects next year. This is due to the fact that he won the RP chase after the national weights were announced, so the handicapper had no chance to factor that win into his aintree weight. As of today, life gets a lot tougher for him.
Obviously McKelvey again, he'll still carry under 11st I'd imagine next year depending on who top weight will be but obviously he needs to make a full recovery but all is sounding good this morning from what I've read.
And although not on that list, Dunbrody Millar. He nearly made the race this time so his Topham win ought to put him on a high enough mark to make the race, he loves the course, has won a Sussex National over 3m 5f so you'd like to think he has every chance of staying the extra mile, he was pulled up in the Summer National that McKelvey won but he was out of form last summer so can't tell yet if he'll definitely see it out but I'd imagine he'll run in this Summer's Uttoxeter marathon so perhaps we'll know more after that. He races bang up with the pace and will be 10 years old which will also be in his favour.
If Ballycassidy goes to Perth next, as he did last year following the National, get on (he was a nice price too last year as I think Martha's Kinsman was sent off fav) Bally hosed up and yesterday the clues were there that he's come back into form. _________________ 2008 Ryder Cup Competition - WINNER

trouble is with Simon they have absolutly nothing to work with because of his rating of 143 if like you say they take the view that this is the only race that matters then yes he could come back with maybe a low 140 mark but if he wins another chase before next year it is game over.
That is 9 years in a row now the winner has come from a rating of between 136-144 _________________ Forest are Treemendous

I think mckelvy is going to get a rating of about 142/143 after that run so if he gets back next year the only way they could do it is either run him over very short trips knowing he will not make the frame or give him a spin over hurdles before coming back for the National keeping that rating somewhere handy _________________ Forest are Treemendous
as well as the Simon incident, Philson Run came to virtual stop after jumping the 8th fence. Don't know if he landed steeply or whatever but he lost all momentum. To reach the frame after those two events was a mighty effort.
