nosebands are not delared on theracecard,so i guess they aint regarded as significent enough to be counted as headgear.what is a austrailain noseband by the way,i must of heard this mentioned twice over the last few days ,on the bbc and atr? _________________ stotsfold going to be special this flat season.

It's that (usually orange) rubber strip that comes from the top of the bridle down the middle of the horses' nose, divides at approximately the point where the ordinary noseband would be, and splits into two, one to each side where it fits with a rubber ring underneath the bit ring (it's quite hard to describe without being able to draw it!).
Its main purpose is to keep the bit up on the bars of the horse's mouth, and to prevent one ring of the bit being pulled through the horses' mouth if the jockey has to turn sharply for any reason. A Fulmer snaffle, which lots of racehorses wear (the bit with cheekpieces) has the same effect - the snaffle ring cannot be dragged through the horses' mouth - useful, particularly on a puller! I use one on my rehab mare.
