hunter chases start in the next couple of weeks and its a area of the sport where you can seek out some good value bets as not many punters take much interest and are confused or dont understnd p2p form.both kingscliff and redbrook lad have been big winning confident bets for me in the past simply by just taking the time to go through there form.one of the most simplest ways is to compare the times ,most races are run at around 3miles.the 2 horses i've mentioned were clocking exceptional times in p2p and its much easier these days to get to grips with the form as the weekender does a middlepage pullout each week starting from the beginning of the new year.here's some horse who could be worth watching out for.

red brook lad may be 12,but he as won 10 hunter chases in all since 2003,at least 1 every seaosn and won 4 last season.he just recently won a ladies open p2p and again, still clocking by far the fastest the of the whole card.he does start at cramp odds these days though, but he looks set to score again this season in hunter chases.

risk accessoris owned by j p mcmanus, but he is been aimed at the foxhunters chase at cheltenham ,has he doesnt think knife edge is good enough, who if you look at his form ,would seem a great candidate.risk accessor hasnt ran in hunter chases yet,so would need to win or come 2nd in at least 2 of them to get a chance to line up in the foxhunters,so i expect this one to be ready to run soon.

nebeltau is only 5,but looks exciting young prospect .he won easily last week in the fastest time of the card.owned by jp macmanus as well.is age and what he as done so far under p2p's is simialar to that of kingscliff before he won the foxhunters.he looks certain to run in hunters chase this season.

Oscar India, General Striker, Whyso Mayo, Don't be Daft, Mhic Mocroi (if he goes the hunter chase route and doesn't stay in points this season) - a good hunter chase at Thurles tomorrow (postponed from last Thursday) which will give some pointers (sorry about the pun!)

You can access the results via www.jumpingforfun.co.uk

They have a link to the pointtopoint website, but you can access their results service (I don't know how quickly they put the results up for non-subscribers) perfectly well - I have just done so and note that Irlut (S Waley-Cohen) came third in the Open race at Barbury Castle (Point to Point Owners and Riders Association Meeting).

Hope this helps.

first hunter chase tomorrow is at wincanton, which in the past as been a strong event(kingscliffe and double silk past winners).this years event is pretty strong, would of been even strong if katarino had stood her ground, but risk assessor and red brook lad do run.the ground as dried out for redbrook lad ,who does struggle on testing over this trip, but the horse as just recently won a point to point in what is coming a common occurance with him,he always seems to clock the fastest time of the point to point card most the time.he was over 4 secs faster in his open race and esily won compared to long night was in his ,who was all out to win, another one of his rivals tomorrow.

risk assessor is considered to be the connections best chance in the foxhunters at cheltenham, even more so then knife edge who did well last seaosn for them in hunter chases.a reproduction of his 5th place at cheltenham should be enough to go close, he as to win or come 2nd in 2 hunter/psp races to qualify for the foxhunters at cheltenham.

sonevafushi is pretty young to go into thes events having previously not started in them, and i wonder if veniatia williams is getting desperate with this one,as on his best form,he would be a serious threat, but we have a young horse who appears to have problems(hence the drop to hunter chases) taking on a in - form hunter in RBL and anotehr in RA who is considered to be the stabeles best chance in the foxhunters.

depending on the odds,i will marginally prefer redbrook lad at this satge and providing no rain comes.

Rob, I'm surprised Venetia is going the hunter chase route with Sonevafushi. He was decent class a couple of seasons ago. (Not that the hunter chasers are not decent class, just that it's a different game!) Will look up the Wincanton race. Last week Whyso Mayo won again (Thurles) in front of Oscar India and Arctic Times - I think the latter may be the Irish threat this year in the Cheltenham Foxhunter (and don't forget the Aintree one as well.....)

Have had a look at the Wincanton race - I have a suspicion Long Night might just do it. However, I looked up the form of the oldest contestant, No Retreat. He has run in (wait for it) the Whitbread, the Grand National, the Victor Chandler, the (current) Red Square Vodka or whatever at Haydock, the Great Yorkshire, the Scilly Isles, the Dipper Chase and the Foxhunters at both Cheltenham and Aintree. What a record! And tomorrow, at 14, he carries 12st7. Whatever else, these hunter chasers are TOUGH! And do you know, in a career that started in November 1998 and which included 31 runs before this one, he has never fallen, been brought down or unseated rider. He has been pulled up a few times (including in the Grand National) but what the hell, an amazing record.

To continue.....this coming week there are 2 good UK hunter chases, one at Leicester mid-week (all chase card, interestingly), and the Military (RA) Hunter Chase at Sandown on Friday - in which one Exit Swinger is entered, having moved from Paul Nicholls to one R Ford of Tarporley - the same R Ford who trained Forest Gunner and whose wife Carrie rode him in the National (the horse, not the chap....... )

Another possible to look out for is Ruby Gale, and I think Red Brook Lad is entered either at Leicester or Sandown. Sonevafushi is also entered at Sandown, having won his first hunter chase in good style.

I have a feeling that up until Cheltenham I am probably going to be sticking to hunter chases - my judgement on the other types of races being seriously off at the moment and needing a rest!!

red brook lad is a beast over this rare hunter chase trip(sandown) and expect him to run miles better then he did at wincanton

I just ahd a look at the entries and one name stood out - Cantillion's Be Fair. I remember seeing him win a couple of Huntingdon hurdle races in 2003, and he was 4th to Sadlers Wings in a Gd1 Punchestown hurdle (with Watson Lake and Point Barrow behind). I know he was quite fancied to make it as a chaser but he didn't appear again after being beaten by Almaydan on his debut. From the RP it doesn't look as if he's been point-to-pointing unless anyone knows different? Presumably he's had an injury to miss so much time.

Rowan, The RP is patchy about p2p form - I don't know about the paper, but the website ignores it (as does SL), which is annoying. www.Irish-Racing.com includes p2p form in its horse search and form look-up service, but obviously only for Irish points. I'm not sure whether there is a free website access to UK p2p form. www.pointtopoint.co.uk has form, but it is subscription only.

If you're serious about following hunter chases, a sub to www.pointtopoint.co.uk might be worth it - but frankly, I can usually pick up enough stuff from elsewhere to keep up to date.
