Indeed - as you know, he was my pick for the Festival race, and he got bustled out of it (not disgraced by any means but I expected better). I think I may be fated to support him this time round as well, on the principle that loyalty is its own reward! _________________ UNEXPECTED WINNER 2009 FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION!
Decent hunter chase at Fairyhouse tomorrow. At a first look, I think it's between Arctic Copper (storming record in points but doesn't, like Arctic Times, seem to be able to translate this to the higher quality of hunter chasing on a consistent basis); Oscar India (4th in the Cheltenham Foxhunters and so able to mix it with the best of the genre); and Agus a Vic who again has good point form and has done a bit in hunter chases also.
As I have had a miserable day today (Teeton Prince 4th and Cantarinho only 2nd at Fakenham after I took s/p and it was backed in to 2/1 favourite - I won't do that again!)) my pockets are a tad empty at the moment - so am looking to recoup and will take a early price on one of the above. _________________ UNEXPECTED WINNER 2009 FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION!
Tommy, I don't know if the double has been done in the recent past (Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters). I suspect not, but if anyone knows the answer eg over the last 20 years, then that would be very interesting. I think Drombeag put up a terrific performance to win at the Festival, but I don't think this guarantees him a win at Aintree. The race is actually shorter, and the fences and track "different" - also, the going may well be good on Thursday. Very few of the Festival entries are attempting to double up, apart from Arctic Times, Drombeag himself, and Ned Kelly. Several good horses, including Oscar India, Whyso Mayo, Cobreces, Red Brook Lad and others have swerved Aintree. It really is a big puzzle, and although I may well stick the Jen's Pennies on Mouseski and/or Whitenzo it is a pretty open race at this stage.
Maybe caution isn't your middle name, but it sure is mine! _________________ UNEXPECTED WINNER 2009 FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION!
I was pleased to see Be Fair win a hunter chase today - I had high hopes for this one under rules after some excellent runs over hurdles but I presume he had a problem as he wasn't back on a race course until last month. He must have a decent future ahead of him hunter chasing.
Yes, Rowan, beat my pick (Cantarinho) in the process! I hadn't recalled his hurdle form (which was a bit ago now) and as you say, good to see a decent one making a successful comeback.
Notebook: Be Fair! (And wasn't there a top class eventer of that name? _________________ UNEXPECTED WINNER 2009 FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION!

Be Fair stuck in my head because he notched up a sequence at Huntingdon, my local track at the time! And yes - I think he was one of Lucinda Prior-Palmer's Badminton winners.
Strong Flow is one of 10 in the 3pm at Stradbally tomorrow - hope he gets round this time.
The good Spring Margot is favourite, but will be anchored by 12st7 and although the going will be good/firm and he has won and been placed on good at 20, 21 and 23 furlongs I can't see him managing with that weight (last time he carried that was on soft at Wincanton in a Class 6 and he came 6th of 8.)
The one that caught my eye is Ifni du Lac, who was run out of it by Gangsters are Us and 4 others in a hunter chase at Sedgefield in March. However, he has good credentials and with McCain D and Burton R training and riding respectively, and with bottom weight, he can't be ignored. I shotlisted him for his last race, and will back him tomorrow (or even tonight if I can get a decent early price!) _________________ UNEXPECTED WINNER 2009 FLAT 10 TO FOLLOW COMPETITION!
Aha, hunter chasing is starting, at least in Ireland (where the point to point season starts earlier than over here).
At the risk of being accused of aftertiming ("no Aunty Jen, surely not!"), there were two divisions of the maiden Hunter Chase at Downpatrick yesterday. The Man from Slatt won Div II with incredible ease, leading all the way, putting something like forty lengths between him and the next horse, and "holding on" for a distance win. My only slight criticism of his performance was that he hit the second out rather hard, but luckily stood up.
OK, it was "only" a maiden hunter chase, but he wasn't favourite (French Thyne was) and he has also won at least his last two points (doing this from memory). Keep an eye (and yes, I did back him, and so did the Australian steward - not Ray Murrihy!- who was with me, to much delight all round!)
