Cheers.
Might have to try some Aberlour - the 12yr old & 15 yr old gets good reviews on the web link Westmeadhawk provided.
You'll have to let me know what you think of it The_Pilgarlic.

Not sure I'm quite ready to give the 60% stuff a go yet though!!

Just wanted to ask you whiskey drinkers- the recent series of Jack Daniels ads lay it on thick about heritage, craftsmanship, quality etc; I assumed this is a nonsense, and no self-respecting whiskey-lover would consider supping the stuff?

The American and Canadian whiskies are really different drinks and should be treated as a category on their own, I think. I'm personally not fond of them because to my taste they are too sweet, but I know a couple of educated and discerning Scotch/Irish drinkers who do like them from time to time as a bit of a change.

Edited to add: if got as a present and you don't like them (rye OR bourbon) then pour some over a dish of decent vanilla ice-cream.....

On the water question, remember that most malt whiskies are bottled at factories in the central belt. This is where they add water to bring the strength down to 40% and it will be good old tap water, not the lovely pure stuff used during the distillation.

If you don't like your tap water then use bottled water, if it is OK then you're really just adding MORE tap water.

Yes but presumably the tap water used isn't the brutally smelly stuff that London water is, for example. I used to live in a hard water district where sometimes you could actually taste the chlorine/whatever chemicals they were using, but in soft water districts it's not so bad, I suppose. Certainly our mains water is pretty palatable, and despite having a well I wouldn't hesitate to add our mains water if feeling lazy!!

Hope you enjoy the Aberlour.

And I hope it inspires you to try a few others, like Lagavulin (so distinctive and different), Laphroaig (the 15-year-old is one of my favourites), Talisker (could drink it all night) and Macallan (matured in sherry casks so it has a sweetness, which is not to everyone's taste, but I find is a great one for the right occasion).

I always drink mine neat, although a drinking buddy swears by a drop of water with it.

Top tip - I'll get down there asap

I have just finished a bottle of something uninspiring (not in one go but over a week with some help!) so I am ready for a new one

My old man is partial to a single malt scotch.

Anyone care to recommend one for his Christmas present?

As a bourbon lover I have to say they very much do count(although Jim Beam is not the most shining example of bourbon I have to say). It always annoys me when the malt whisky snobs rubbish bourbon
