Archie I cannot see any need.

we have Krul (but he's probably going) we have Elloit and Darlow and we have the excellent U21 international Freddie Woodman. The latter of those could be a star in the future, so I can't see the need for pepe

plus we have other areas which need strengthening far more than goalkeeper!

Are you trying to say he doesn't know what he's doing GR?

Ashley will get what the markets feel newcastle is worth. With decent investment and guaranteed huge crowds in the Prem, plus the TV Fees, 400 million may well look cheap.

coded messages coming out of St James' Park this week

With our squad (smaller than last season's) back in training (I am making an idiot of myself by going to Preston on Saturday to watch them pre-season) and only 2 signings (one of which, Atsu, was here on loan last season) there is a bit of grumbling

Rafa has said he is troubled by the "crazy transfer market" which is code for telling the club to get moving. We missed out on Tammy Abrahams (to Swansea! ,) and Rafa wanted Reina from Napoli which hasn't been actioned (I wouldn't go for him but at this stage we should be backing Rafa's judgment to the hilt).

The independent has an article today ("from momentum to mistrust")which is free of any quotes from anyone involved and in normal circumstances might be seen as shit-stirring but given our owner's appalling track record and the alleged offer to give Rafa everything that comes from getting promoted (how many tens of millions is that?) a spend of 4m this far (and a good few off the wage bill too) doesn't look like the words turning in to deeds.

I warned those around me last season that if we went up we would have a reversion to type from Ashley. Gamble on being good enough to stay up with the minimum spending. I was laughed at (not for the first time, nor the last) with stuff like he has learned his lesson and Rafa was in charge.
as Bob Monkhouse used to say about his decision to become a comedian  "they're not laughing now"

There is still time for this to be turned around but we remain short of quality players. We probably won't go down but when you see Huddersfield and Brighton strengthening (especially Huddersfield) and us standing still you do begin to wonder.

Our problems are, quote simply, all on display today.

This is going to be a long and difficult season.

It is if your captain continues to act like he did today.

What are your realistic expectations for the season? Assuming Rafa stays I can see you finishing around 14th

Assuming...

I think anything which involves being out of a relegation scrap is a bonus. I would bite your hand off for 14th at this stage.

Shelvey is a plonker but we are really going to struggle for goals

Yes I think you probably need to sign a proven scorer although that is easier said than done. Good luck for the season as the Premier League is better for having Newcastle in it

Cheers.

We do bring a certain je ne sais qua

Hopes for Spurs this season? If you are top 4 with a cup and a decent run in Europe that would be progress??

I think you want to win a pot.

You are right GR I think we need to win something, not sure the league is realistic with the Wembley factor, so would take the FA Cup. 4th place or above would be acceptable in the league, I am just happy with the way the club is progressing and doing it in what I consider the right way, not by being a sugar daddy's play thing.
