Well, the horses are now in a different field (fair bit of scampering round this am!), the goats are out of their temporary stable and back in their paddock, the pigs are grumpy, and the geese are laying like billy oh (they must be mad...)

It was lovely and sunny today, but we expect snow on Friday....

There was indeed a rainbow today....

Firstly, aren't storms usually female?

Secondly, do the proper big storms ever get much beyond the middle of the alphabet?

For many years hurricanes and other tropical storms bore only girls' names. In that era when political correctness had never been heard of, the exclusively male meteorological community in the USA considered female names appropriate for such unpredictable and dangerous phenomena. In the 1970s the growing numbers of female meteorologists began object to such a sexist practice, and from 1978 onwards girls' and boys' names alternated.

In 2005 (year of Katrina) they had to start using the Greek Alphabet to name storms as there were so many. Here's a link if interested
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2005/

where you get real time advisories like this...
Quote:
...POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE KATRINA
CONTINUES TO APPROACH THE NORTHERN GULF COAST...
...SUSTAINED HURRICANE-FORCE WINDS NEARING THE SOUTHEASTERN
  LOUISIANA COAST...

Quote:
COASTAL STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 18 TO 22 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE
LEVELS...LOCALLY AS HIGH AS 28 FEET...ALONG WITH LARGE AND DANGEROUS
BATTERING WAVES...CAN BE EXPECTED NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE THE
CENTER MAKES LANDFALL.  SOME LEVEES IN THE GREATER NEW ORLEANS AREA
COULD BE OVERTOPPED.  SIGNIFICANT STORM SURGE FLOODING WILL OCCUR
ELSEWHERE ALONG THE CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN GULF OF MEXICO COAST.

Here is a stat too make you think twice. One part of Scotland has had enough rain to beat the old record rainful for January figure.

And there are STILL 24 days left in the month.

Was chatting today about farmers allowing their fields to be flooded to take the excess water and being compensated accordingly. Nice idea but the conversation inevitably turned towards how much compensation...

If they build levee's (sp?) how high do they have to be and will they spoil the traditional riverside walk enjoyed by generations of Britons..?

Blimey!

Anyone else sweltering in this heat?

Not that I'm complaining but an ocean to jump into would be nice...

In my experience, females are usually stormy.

Back in the day storms andtTornados were named after whoever spotted them first on the radar sytem.

I think they alternate between male and female across the alphabet so we get Alan, Beth, Chris, Davina, Edward, Felicty etc etc
