Hi guys, sorry to post a URL straight off the bat but I think this might be something you're interested in:
http://www.right2bet.net
It's an online petition and campaign to alter the EU's unfair gambling regulations. At the moment - punters and bookies are currently penalised in the way that their freedom of choice is restricted within the EU. This means we lose the chance to get better odds, have difficulty betting abroad sometimes, etc.
Basically the EU is supposedly committed to a free market in all goods and services, but for whatever reason it hasnt done this with gambling - which means we continue to get shafted. The irony is, introducing a free market in online gambling is one of the few areas where it wouldn't involve any painful dislocation for ordinary people (e.g. loss of jobs) but would involve clear advantages (better access, better odds). So why haven't they done it? Because member state govts want to continue lining their pockets, of course... |

or because the levy and other payments in to racing from betting would dry up if this happened.

I don't think that's necessarily the case at all. You can still have a system where money is ploughed into the sport, nobody is questioning that. In fact, nobody is asking for deregulation or any changes of that nature. What they want is for punters to have the ability to cross borders...which wouldn't necessarily involve any change to the levy.
Anyway, if you want a more fun way to sign this exact same petition (read: fit girl, skimpy bikini, marker pen) then see http://www.thenakedpetition.com. It's the same deal but you get a personalised photo sent to your inbox after you've scrawled all over her body

Just to update people - if there is anyone who doubted whether or not these EU laws make a difference to your online gambling experience... see http://bit.ly/1iAoxj :O Look at the disparity in odds between those gambling monopolies! Also here's an article showing the odds for the Liverpool v Man City premiership game: http://bit.ly/57PUt6 ...So much for "one Europe" lol!
The Right2Bet petition is gaining significant traction at the moment amongst gambling fans, operators and also in different EU Member States. They even have a tool where you can lobby your MEP directly. As soon as their petition reaches 1million, it will go before the EU Commission so I'd encourage everyone to go to http://www.right2bet.net to add your name to the petition now! |
