No one will get close to Michelle Larcher de Brito who is third on Court 17 today. Not even Sharapova. Although the noises Larcher de Brito makes aren't really grunts. _________________ 2008 Ryder Cup Competition - WINNER
When out walking brother don't you forget,
It ain't often that you'll ever find a friend.
There was actually quite an earnest discussion about this on R4 today - apparently the Portuguese girl actually screams rather than grunts - Annabel Croft was saying that it is really off-putting (unlike Sharapova and Kutuzova who I am watching at the moment on Highlights). I suppose if both players do it then there is no problem - the problem would arise if one player grunted/yelled and the other did not; then the non-grunter/yeller could legitimately say that they were being put off by the other player's noise.
Frankly, I find the Sharapova/Kutuzova noise most unpleasant.....But who am I etc....
I am afraid all these grunters and screamers are driving spectators away, they are me anyway. I watched two games of Sharapova yesterday and then switched over! _________________ First Competition Winner 2009

Billy Hills have opened a market on grunters which is proving quite popular
They go 25/1 that a grunter is disqualified
4/1 that a player or players is docked one or more points for grunting
and finally 8/11 that a constant grunter is complained to the umpire by his/her opponent _________________ I AM HAPPY TO JOIN WITH YOU TODAY IN WHAT WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE GREATEST DEMONSTRATION FOR FREEDOM IN THE HISTORY OF OUR NATION(THE I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH,1963, MARTIN LUTHER KING)
I heard a discussion about this. Apparantly most of them (including Sharapova) do not grunt when practicing (however hard they are going at it)
The grunt is taught; it is a noise made by the player to stop the opponent hearing the sound of ball on strings as that can help the opponent identifying the amount of spin and type of sopin on the ball (so they say). Also some do make a lot ore noise when losing than when winning. It is by no means natural or unavoidable
Alan Minter was warned (possibly disqualified?) in the Olympics years ago for grunting when he hit an opponent (he was known in those days as "boom boom")
I have to say the whole thing is - to me - horrible,. The quicker they get it out of the sport the better.
Occasional gasp of effort is inevitable. The farcical noises being made now are not _________________ Geordie_R

And without wishing to be sexist (heaven forbid!) why is it that the grunters/yellers are almost all female? If there were an advantage in terms of hearing the strike of the ball on racquet, surely the men would have picked this up as well? I can think of a few men who grunt/yell, but not many and only it seems when extra effort is called for.
